The photography for the profile on Michael de Kock was done at Hagenhof by Frenchman Frederic Andrieu while on assignment in South Africa.
Thirty-one-year-old Andrieu hails from the South of France where, during his teens, he started his photographic endeavours by snapping celebrities on the golden beaches of the Côte d'Azur.
In 1988 he left for Paris to study and, in his free time, started working on fashion shows. Soon his work became known and he won his first major assignment for the magazine Elle. 'Mis was followed by a photographic profile for the The House of Lanvin and his success on these projects won him an exclusive contract with Fairchild Publications.
Then came his big break. American Vogue contracted him to work for them on a spread on Jean Paul Gaultier which took
Frederic from New York to Milan and back to Paris again.
Nowadays he flits around the world on assignments for fashion, catalogues and advertising. During the past five five years he has photographed some of the most famous of the ramp, the stage and the screen. In 1997 alone he worked on five continents! It was thus inevitable that he would also land up in South Africa. The main shoot he came out for will be published in the July edition of marie claire.
But, while photographing the rich and famous keeps him on his toes, depicting ordi
nary people and everyday situations, is his first love. The completion of a project he started while working in the mega-cities - a book on the human aspects of New York, London, Rome and Paris - has become a major ambition of his. In this series of black and white photographs he juxtaposes scenes from life and living.
